Let's be precise: Qatar's stopover is not free. It is a hotel package sold at a special stopover rate. Connect through Doha with 12 to 96 hours between flights and you can usually add a 4-star or 5-star hotel package for up to four nights, depending on your itinerary (current rates on the Qatar Airways stopover page). Qatar's terms say not every booking is eligible and every package is subject to availability. The part that trips people up is not the price. It is when you have to book it.

Doha layover or Qatar stopover?
A connection in Doha under 12 hours is a layover: there is no stopover package to buy, and whether you leave Hamad International Airport is up to you and your visa. At 12 hours or more it becomes eligible for the stopover package, and the airline treats the extra time as a mini trip.
| Layover (under 12h) | Stopover (12-96h) | |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel package | Not available | 4-star or 5-star at the stopover rate, up to 4 nights |
| Checked bags | Stay checked through | Under 24 hours they cannot be collected, per Qatar's terms; plan to live out of your carry-on |
| Visa | Only matters if you leave the airport | Needed if your passport is not visa-free |
For what a short connection can realistically fit, see our Doha layover guide.
How it works
The package is sold by Qatar Airways Holidays and Discover Qatar, the airline's own travel arms. The simplest route: when you book your flights on qatarairways.com, add the stopover hotel in the same transaction. If you already bought your flights, Qatar's terms send you to Discover Qatar to book the hotel and any tours.
Pick your nights and your hotel tier and pay the package price. Stays are room-only by default; breakfast is included in some categories and hotels, so check the tier before you pay. Each night covers up to a 24-hour stay, and the hotel can charge for extra hours.
How to book it, step by step
- Search a Qatar Airways itinerary that connects in Doha with 12+ hours (use a multi-city search to stretch the connection if needed).
- Add the stopover hotel before you pay for the flights, in the same booking.
- Already booked? Go to Discover Qatar's stopover page with your Qatar Airways booking details and add the hotel there.
- Make sure your hotel check-in date matches your arrival date in Doha. Qatar's terms require it.
- At the hotel, show your boarding pass and the stopover booking confirmation. The name on both must match.
What's free and what's not
Nothing in the package itself is free: the hotel is paid, at the stopover rate. US travelers should run Visit Qatar's eligibility checker before booking, because Qatar's own terms say a valid visa may be required and entry is at immigration's discretion. Discover Qatar says travelers from 102+ countries enter visa-free, and it processes a transit visa of up to 4 days (3 nights) for passports that are not. Applications take at least 3 working days, and a 4-night package needs a different visa. Qatar's terms also make a Discover Qatar or Qatar Airways Holidays hotel booking mandatory for some passports. Not included: most meals, laundry, minibar, room service, and tours unless you add them.
Where people screw this up
- Calling it free. The hotel is paid, at the stopover rate. Visa-free entry, where your passport has it, is a separate thing.
- Booking an 11-hour connection. The minimum is 12 hours, or there is no package to book.
- Buying the flights first and expecting the stopover tab to still be there. Qatar's terms tie the hotel to the flight transaction. After that, it is a separate booking with Discover Qatar.
- Assuming you can cancel. Cancellations are charged at 100%, and there is no refund for unused nights once travel has started. The terms allow cancellation if your visa is rejected.
FAQ
Does it work on American Airlines or other oneworld tickets?
Discover Qatar's stopover page lists oneworld member tickets with a Doha transit as eligible. The Qatar Airways offer page mentions only Qatar Airways and codeshare tickets, so confirm eligibility for your exact ticket on Discover Qatar's stopover page before you build a trip around it.
Can I do a stopover in both directions?
Yes. Qatar's terms allow one booking on the outbound and one on the return per ticket, each with a confirmed Qatar Airways or codeshare flight.
Can I get my checked bag out on a 16-hour stopover?
No. Under 24 hours in Doha, checked baggage cannot be collected. Pack what you need for the night in your carry-on.
Is Doha worth 2 days?
Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art, the Corniche, and a desert safari fit comfortably in 48 hours.
